This song has literally been recorded for every record I made since the mid 90’s. That’s 4 records. And it was written even before those. It just never worked or did what I wanted it to. Too funky or too rock or too too. Just didn’t happen but I was determined and there was always something I believed in about the tune – it was my failing to see the right approach, not the songs fault. Then I was listening to the Roots “Seed” and it just hit me. Big phat drum and bass thing, stripped down and simple. And we were on again. No small amount of influence from The Heavy in it too. The middle section was once a guitar solo, but I wanted to combine Buckley’s version of Alex Chilton’s “Kangaroo” with a vibe that EDM gets, which at their roots are similar. Hypnotic and building. Thus, the middle section. Like a breakdown and build by the seminal Propellerheads. Add Jay Davidson and horn section and serve warm. I like the idea that the lyric isn’t exactly clear if the guy (me) was jumping off or just getting off his ass. The latter was more the idea, but I liked it open.
